Drivers warned not to fill up tank at petrol stations at one time this

The most simple way is to not fill up late at night. Thieves can watch petrol station forecourts during the night hours, tracking cars that fill up and where they park afterwards. If you consistently fill your tank at the same time and place each week, you’re creating a predictable pattern that makes you an easy mark, Urbonas said. Instead, vary your routine and fill up during daylight hours when there are more people around and better visibility.

Below there are some other ways to keep you and your fuel safe.

Park smart

Thieves prefer dark, isolated spots, so park under CCTV cameras, well lit areas and close to buildings. At home, use your garage or driveway rather than leaving your car on the street. If you’re parking overnight in a public car park, choose a bay near the entrance or one that is well-lit.

Use a locking fuel cap

This is an easy and cheap deterrent. Replace your standard cap with one that needs a key to open. They cost between £10 and £30.

“It’s a small investment that pays for itself the first time it stops a theft,” says Urbonas.

He added: “Most fuel thieves are opportunistic and will move on to an easier target rather than spend time trying to break a lock.”

Watch out for pump scams

Card skimmers can be attached to payment terminals at pumps. If something feels off, it’s better to pay inside. Check your receipts too as some pumps can be rigged to charge you more than you actually receive.

Install a cheap dashcam or motion sensor

“Even a visible dashcam can be enough to make thieves think twice,” Urbonas said.

Some can cost as little as £40 and switch on when there is movement near your car, alerting your phone. Light sensors near where you park are also a good added layer of protection.

Keep your fuel level unpredictable

“Thieves look for easy, reliable targets,” Urbonas said.

“By changing up your habits, you’re making yourself a much harder mark.”
