Cabbage has remained a kitchen staple for generations. It provides a satisfying crunch to dishes such as coleslaw, transforms into silky tenderness in warming soups, and develops gorgeous caramelisation when pan-fried.
For those planning to sauté their cabbage, cooking expert Sophie has taken to her YouTube channel Essen Recipes to share that one common ingredient acts as the cherry on top to make this vegetable tastier, and that’s apple cider vinegar. She said: “Just cabbage! Add one secret ingredient to cabbage, and you won’t believe how tasty a simple cabbage dish can be! The secret ingredient? A splash of vinegar because even cabbage needs a little zing in its life. Sautéed cabbage is a simple, delicious vegetable side that’s healthy and pairs well with many dishes.
“Even if you think you don’t like cabbage, give this recipe a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how tasty a simple cabbage dish can be.”
Not only is this side dish delicious, but it also cooks in 10 minutes in the pan.
Ingredients
One small head of cabbage One tablespoon of olive oilOne tablespoon of butterOne tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
Method
The first step is to grab your cabbage and slice it as thinly as possible before heating a large pan over a medium-high heat and adding in your oil and butter.
Once the butter is melted, add in the cabbage and season with salt and pepper.
Give the cabbage a stir and leave it to saute for 10 minutes. Make sure to only stir occasionally during this time.
After the time is up, the cabbage should have softened and turned a golden shade. At this point, turn off the heat and stir in the vinegar.
For those who want to add even more flavour, they can sprinkle on some thyme; however, this is not essential.
