Stop putting avocado on toast when cheaper alternative tastes as good

Avocado toast has established itself as a breakfast staple throughout British homes. Its velvety consistency, delicate nutty taste and adaptability with eggs, salmon, or honey have cemented its status as a morning favourite for countless people.

However, food experts are now championing an alternative green ingredient that could prove even tastier, simpler to make, and considerably more economical. Bursting with taste and nutrients, frozen peas can be transformed into a silky, colourful spread that complements bread and various toppings beautifully, reports the Express. Good Food chef Liberty Fennell has revealed her formula for “Non avo toast,” a pea-based guacamole that she characterises as an ideal replacement for avocado.

The preparation requires fewer than 30 minutes from start to finish, with under 10 minutes of actual cooking time, and provides enough for four servings.

Those requiring smaller quantities can simply scale down the ingredients proportionally.

To create the pea guacamole, boil 250g of frozen peas in bubbling water for two to three minutes until soft yet maintaining their vivid green colour.

Strain and rinse beneath cold water to cool completely.

Subsequently, blitz the peas with lime juice until achieving a smooth consistency.

Fold in two tablespoons of full-fat Greek-style yoghurt, 30g of pickled jalapeño chillies, half a small red onion, a garlic clove, 15g of fresh coriander, and an optional red chilli.

Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper according to preference. The mixture can be spread across toasted bread and crowned with poached or boiled eggs.

A drizzle of olive oil and a splash of fiery chilli sauce provide additional zest.

The pea-based dip will stay fresh in the fridge for up to five days, making it a handy choice for hectic mornings.

The creation has garnered rave reviews from culinary fans.

Food bloggers and kitchen enthusiasts have posted their own twists online, substituting coriander with mint or blending peas alongside edamame.

One dubbed it “fresh and delicious” and emphasised the dish’s striking appearance when presented in a white bowl.

Another branded it “a great alternative to avocado guacamole” and commended its practicality, observing that frozen peas are simpler to stock than perfectly ripe avocados.

Fennell’s formula demonstrates that basic components can elevate a breakfast essential into something thrilling.

With the pea-based spread, toast transcends its role as merely an avocado carrier, transforming into a vibrant, tasty foundation for a topping that’s effortless, budget-friendly, and brimming with green goodness.
