UK households have been urged to keep their wardrobes open this weekend for one important reason. It appears that the advice will certainly come in handy on Sunday, as according to WXCharts’ weather maps, weather conditions are forecasted to be cold and wet across the nation.
Wintry weather can cause its fair share of issues, and despite thinking that staying at home will help you escape those problems, conditions like the ones expected at the end of this week can also cause problems indoors. Condensation and mould build-up often impact households during the colder seasons of the year as the warm air indoors ultimately clashes with the cold air from outside, resulting in water droplets on cold surfaces, such as windows.
While that might not sound like a huge issue, that issue of condensation can quickly turn into a mould outbreak in your home as the condensation provides the moisture that causes mould to thrive.
Fortunately, there are many ways to tackle both of the issues and prevent mould from building up quickly around the home, including keeping wardrobes open.
Yorkshire Condensation Control highlighted how important air circulation is to help tackle condensation and mould, whilst warning that “the bedroom wardrobe is the perfect place to breed mould” because it is full of clothes and the doors are typically always shut.
It explained: “Keeping the wardrobe doors open all the time will help with that essential movement of air that’s needed to avoid condensation. In fact, you should think about where you store ‘vulnerable’ clothing (leather and suede attract mould first). Maybe the wardrobe or the master bedroom is not the best place at all.”
Experts revealed that a “stale and foisty” smell is the first sign of a mould outbreak in your clothes. However, it is easy to become “accustomed” to this, so they advised asking someone else for “an honest opinion”.
The small habit change can make a big difference, particularly during the colder seasons. Not only will it keep your clothes clean, but it will also help keep your home healthier.
