There’s nothing more annoying during the winter mornings than having to defrost your car; however, it turns out you may be able to prevent it if you follow some simple expert advice. Drivers have shared a simple car tip that’s backed by the RAC (Royal Automobile Club), and it’s super easy to do if you want to stop your windscreen freezing overnight.
The hack was previously posted on Reddit after a driver revealed an easy way to achieve clear windscreens, especially on the inside. He shared the idea with others, and it turns out you need to complete an essential task to try and prevent the problem.
On social media the driver wrote: “With winter here, clean the inside of your windshield. You’ll be surprised how many of those annoying streaks are on the inside.” It’s not the only frost prevention tip that’s been shared recently either.
One person replied, saying: “Be sure to clean your windshield when there’s no direct sunlight on it. That will help prevent streaks.”
Another added: “Always use a separate microfiber towel to dry with, and dry it good. Leaving any wetness to air dry will cause streaks.”
What does the RAC say?
The RAC emphasises the importance of cleaning your windscreen during winter on its website. When the weather is really cold, windscreens can actually freeze on the inside in some circumstances.
This can happen due to the humidity in the car. High humidity in the vehicle, combined with a cold surface caused by outside temperatures, often results in a frozen windscreen.
When warm, moist air touches the glass, condensation forms and then freezes. However, there’s a simple way you can avoid the problem.
The RAC states: “Clean the interior surfaces, as dirt and grime can hold moisture. Wipe down windows and surfaces regularly to ensure there is nothing to freeze. Knowing how to properly clean your car is important for all car owners.”
This means all you need is a cloth to try and stop the problem in the first place. Wiping the inside of the windscreen daily, using the cleaning solution of your choice, could make a big difference to your mornings.
Why is it important?
It’s important to clean the inside of your windscreen regularly as dirt found on the surface attracts water. If this freezes, you’re left with a frosty interior, which is always tricky to deal with.
Cleaning the car is super important if you want to avoid the problem, and it should form an essential part of your routine. The RAC states preventing the inside of your car windscreen from freezing during the winter is an “integral part of regular car maintenance”.
The website adds: “Make sure you add it to your daily/weekly schedule to keep your vehicle in the best condition possible. To reduce the chances of your interior windscreen freezing, ensure your car is well-ventilated.
“This is especially important for cars with sunroofs due to the added surface area for the condensation to freeze. Open windows whenever it is possible and safe to do so.
“Doing this will balance out the difference between the inside and outside humidity. There are several ways to do this.”
