‘Ideal temperature’ to heat your home to or risk frozen pipes—not 17C

According to a boiler expert from New Boiler Installation Glasgow, understanding how to effectively heat your home in the winter is crucial. Doing so correctly can help keep it as warm as possible without facing skyrocketing bills or frozen pipes.

The boiler expert advised against cranking up the heat when it is cold and instead recommended maintaining a consistent temperature. The pro recommended the “ideal temperature” be between 18C and 20C throughout the winter months. This not only provides comfort for the household but also allows the boiler to operate efficiently.

The expert said: “To avoid frozen pipes, you should set a minimum temperature on your boiler during winter.

“Even when you’re not at home, it’s advisable to keep your thermostat at a minimum of 10C to prevent costly pipe-freezing issues. Modern technology offers an excellent solution in the form of smart thermostats.”

These devices enable precise control over the heating system, allowing homeowners to program schedules to suit their daily needs and preferences.

When the temperature drops to freezing, the water in the pipes often freezes, which then expands, causing cracked pipes or even bursting.

If a pipe bursts, it releases all of the water it was holding into the home, causing extensive water damage.

While keeping the thermostat at a minimum is important, insulating any pipes in unheated rooms or those with exposed pipes can also help. This can be done either with insulation sleeves or foam pipe, known as pipe lagging.

If you plan to head on holiday over the festive period, it’s a good idea to turn off your mains stop tap and open the lowest sink or bath tap to relieve the initial pressure on the pipework.
