A number of popular Christmas presents, including toys and candles, have been urgently recalled by retailers. Shoppers have been urged not to use a series of items due to dangerous risks.
The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) has listed a number of items that have been recalled, including candles, wooden toys and water beads. Their warnings were issued on Christmas Eve, yet many people may have unsuspectingly gifted the items. They are urging people not to use the items and seek a refund.
John Lewis & Partners Wooden Roast Dinner Toy
John Lewis has warned customers to stop using their Wooden Roast Dinner Toy immediately and keep it away from babies and children. The toy is a wooden playset with colourful wooden items representing food, a tray and a knife.
It was sold in stores from September 3 to November 24 and has a product code 75610228. The OPSS said: “The product presents a risk of choking as the hook and loop fastening (Velcro) can detach during reasonably foreseeable use, creating a small part.
“These small parts pose a choking hazard to young children, particularly those under 36 months of age who have a natural tendency to explore objects by placing them in their mouths.
“The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.” Anyone who has the toy has been urged to return it to John Lewis for a full refund.
A4R Water Beads
Multicoloured water gel beads are a popular toy, yet the A4R Water Beads sold on Amazon have been recalled. The toy presents a high risk of asphyxiation and has been removed from sale by the online marketplace.
“If the product is swallowed in its hydrated form, it can block a young child’s airway,” the OPSS said. They recommended that customers stop using the product immediately and contact the point of purchase.
Mr Pen Water Beads
The water beads sold via Desertcart have also been recalled due to a high risk of asphyxiation. They have been removed by the online marketplace as the product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.
If you have this item, you should stop using it straight away and contact the distributor you purchased it from.
Littala Aalto and Kanto Candles
Luxury candles by Littala have been recalled as they present a risk of fire as testing showed the wick may ‘club’, resulting in higher-than-expected flaming. The recall affects their Aalto and Kanto candles of various colours and sizes.
The OPSS said: “The product presents a risk of fire as testing indicates that the wick may ‘club,’ resulting in higher-than-expected flaming. This could lead to increased smoking, wax dripping, and flaming. If left unattended, the flare could ignite nearby objects and potentially cause a fire to spread throughout the room.”
Enjoy & Love Kids Trampoline with Safety Net 55″
The trampoline sold on Amazon has been removed from their website due to a high risk of injury. This is because it lacks essential safety warnings and does not provide adequate visibility for safe access.
The OPSS explained: “The zip closure access is black, matching the rest of the enclosure netting, making it difficult to distinguish and potentially unsafe in emergency situations. Additionally, the minimum specified height enclosure is not met, increasing the risk of falls from the product.”
Siesta Crafts Red Bead Earrings
The red metal beaded earrings have been pulled from sale due to a serious health risk. The product poses a chemical risk due to its excessive concentrations of cadmium and nickel.
“Cadmium accumulates in the body, can damage organs, and may cause cancer,” the OPSS said. “Nickel is a sensitiser and can cause allergic reactions if present in products that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin.”
Skillmatics Aqua Puffs ‘Watch Your Art Grow’ Toy
The toy was rejected at the UK border as it presents a serious risk of choking and injuries. When using the toy, small parts are easily produced and excessively expand when in contact with water.
“As the product expands when hydrated (potentially by up to 1400%), once swallowed it may expand in the digestive tract, causing a blockage,” the OPSS explained.
Enjoy & Love Wooden Learning Walking Toy
The wooden toy sold on Amazon has been recalled due to the serious risk of choking, as small parts can easily detach. It has been removed from the online retailer.
The warning is for model No. YL-TY2301 and has identifiers X002BGUK0J and FBA15KMKJNNWU000002 on Amazon.
