The year has finally drawn to a close with people celebrating up and down the country, eagerly waiting to see what 2026 holds for them. To help you get off to a good start, supermarkets have revealed if they will be open or closed on New Year’s Day.
For those of you who need to nip to the shops to fill up the fridge after a merry New Year’s Eve, the majority of supermarkets will be open to help you out. Supermarkets have also confirmed their trading hours in Scotland on Friday, January 2. Find all the information you need about your local supermarket below.
Aldi
A spokesperson for Aldi confirmed that its stores will be closed on New Year’s Day. Its customers are advised to check local store hours online for any variations.
Asda
Asda has confirmed that its stores will be open from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve, hours will be extended from 7am to 7pm.
Tesco
England, Wales, Northern Ireland Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 9am and close by 6pm on New Year’s Day. Scotland Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 11am to 6pm. Express stores in Scotland will be open from 11am to 6pm.
The majority of Express stores will open from 8am to 10pm, but some larger Express stores may have shorter opening hours.
On New Year’s Eve, Tesco Extra stores and Superstores will close at 7pm, with some variations on the Isle of Man. The majority of Express stores will close at 10pm, and some larger Express stores will close at 7pm.
Scottish Extra stores and Superstores will be open from 8am to 7pm and Scottish Express stores will open from 8am to 8pm. All other stores will revert back to normal trading hours.
Morrisons
All Morrisons stores will be open from 9am to 6pm on New Year’s Day. On New Year’s Eve, its stores will be open from 7am to 7pm.
On Friday, January 2, normal trading hours will resume in England and Wales. In Scotland, stores will be open between 9am and 6pm.
Lidl
A spokesperson from Lidl confirmed that all stores outside the M25 will be closed on New Year’s Day. The supermarkets urged consumers to check their local store’s opening hours on its branch finder or via the Lidl Plus app.
Sainsbury’s
On New Year’s Day, Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be open from 8am to 8pm and convenience stores from 9am to 9pm. Petrol filling stations will open 30 minutes before and close 30 minutes after the main store, except on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when they will open an hour later.
Scotland stores will be open from 8am to 8pm on Friday, January 2, with convenience stores operating normal hours..
Waitrose
While there are no set operating hours for New Year’s Day at Waitrose, they will vary from store to store. Waitrose advised customers to check individual shops by using its branch finder.
M&S
Good Housekeeping UK reported that M&S stores in England and Wales will be closed on New Year’s Day. Scotland stores will be open between 10am and 6pm.
On New Year’s Eve, all stores will be open from 8am to 6pm.
