Keeping your shower drain clean and free from blockages is crucial for avoiding costly repairs. You’ll likely already have these two items in your cupboard making this a cost-effective fix to your blocked drain problem.

Cleaning your shower drain isn’t always easy, and if you’re having trouble unblocking it, these two simple items can help. You might have tried buying a drain unblocker before and found it doesn’t work, but these cheap kitchen staples which could help are things you might already have.

Home experts at Good Housekeeping say you can use vinegar and baking soda to fix the problem.

It says you can make an at-home solution to unclogging a shower by making a mixture of the two.

Once mixed, you can also use it to clean your kitchen sink where it will be just as effective. You should first take half a cup of baking soda and mix with a quarter cup of table salt.

Once mixed, pour it down the drain along with one cup of heated vinegar. This will likely foams and bubble, you should then let it stand for 15 minutes before running hot tap water for at least 15 to 30 seconds.

It’s important to note that you should never use bleach cleaners at the same time as this vinegar mixture as this can cause a chemical reaction.

Before you put any cleaning mixtures down your drain, you should first check to remove any visible debris which would be clogging it.

If you have metal pipes, you should also try putting a kettle of boiling water down there first which can help to break down anything blocking the pipes.

Another method is to try using a plunger, which could help free up your pipes. If you don’t own one, this item is a cheap household essential.

Make sure to plunge for around 30 seconds which should help to remove debris.

If these methods do not work, you can always try buying a drain cleaner to flush it out.

These tough solvents clear out soaps and debris which can be blocking the pipe can be used regularly to keep the issue at bay.
