A compost heap is packed with nutrients that can be used on beds and borders in months and years to come. The art of composting is to keep turning the compost heap with a garden fork to ensure air gets to the contents.

The decomposition of the garden waste including grass cuttings, green foliage and twigs is slower in the colder months and quicker in warmer months. A compost is the perfect way to create a homemade supply of compost and mulch. The compost heap can be added to at any time, although it will be a busier heap in spring, summer and autumn than wintertime.

The contents of the compost will decompose over time and for mulch, we should expect it to take 12 months and for a potting compost about 18 months.

The more space designated to composting, the more mulch and compost will be created.

The mulch and compost can be dug out when ready and spread into beds and borders in spring and autumn.

If you want to keep a neat and tidy heap, then ideally the compost is housed within three chicken wire or palletised walls with an open front.
