How to remove mould from silicone sealants without bleach

Silicone sealant, commonly found lining showers, baths and sinks to prevent water seepage, can often become a breeding ground for black mould due to its rubbery texture and constant exposure to moisture. It’s also notoriously difficult to clean, particularly when mould has been allowed to accumulate over several months, as is the case in many homes.

The key to this hack, according to Chloe, is sterilising fluid. She specifically uses Dr Johnson’s brand, which can be purchased from B&M for 99p.

Dr Johnson’s Sterilising Fluid Highly Concentrated is a disinfectant solution designed to kill germs and bacteria effectively.

Presenting the product to her viewers, Chloe said: “I’ve found sterilising fluid works much better than bleach.”

She proceeds to pour the sterilising fluid along the mould-ridden silicone sealant, then lays kitchen roll over it.

She doused kitchen roll with additional sterilising fluid to ensure the area was thoroughly saturated.

Finally, she advised leaving the sterilising fluid to work its magic for “a couple of hours” or even overnight.

After a period of time, Chloe removed the tissue from the silicone sealant and found that all traces of mould had vanished.

The silicone sealant appeared almost as good as new, with no need for any scrubbing whatsoever.
