I shop at Lidl and Aldi but there’s 1 thing I only ever buy from M&S

Like most things nowadays, the cost of the weekly shop is getting more and more expensive. However, it’s so important that you’re buying enough healthy groceries to give you balanced meals and snacks throughout the week.

I know I’m not alone when I say I’ve really noticed costs creep up in the past couple of years, which is why I tend to try and keep my food bill manageable by being smart about where I shop. As much as I’d love to buy everything from M&S, it’s often seen as one of the pricier supermarkets, so I tend to stick to Aldi and Lidl. But there’s one specific thing that I will always buy from M&S, despite the higher price tag, and in my opinion it’s worth every penny.

If you’ve started off the New Year with the goal of eating healthier, you’ll probably have been pacing the fruit and veg aisles of your local supermarket, picking up various options for snacking and making into meals.

One fruit I find really underrated is the kiwi, and I had been regularly buying the fuzzy green fruit from Aldi and Lidl for months when I came across something a little bit different at M&S.

The golden kiwi has a smooth skin in a pretty golden-brown colour, and instead of being green on the inside, it’s a bright yellow. They’re more expensive, with a four-pack costing around £3, whereas the pack of four I buy from Aldi tends to come in at £1.39 – so they are more than double the price.

On this particular day I was feeling like a treat, so I picked them up anyway and put them in the fridge when I got home. A few days later when I was making breakfast, I peeled and cut one up, surprised to see how different they felt and looked on the outside and the inside too.

But the taste is what really blew my mind. Kiwis have a slightly bitter taste, even when they’re completely ripe, which I know isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. But these golden kiwis couldn’t be further from that. The fruit was so sweet and juicy that it almost didn’t taste like a kiwi at all – it’s more of a tropical flavour that instantly reminds you of being on holiday.

Each time I’ve bought golden kiwis, they’ve been immediately ripe and ready to eat, which I really appreciate. And, if you’re patient enough to wait a couple of extra days, they actually get sweeter as they ripen too.

Sometimes regular kiwis take days or even weeks to fully ripen when you bring them home, and it’s not ideal if you’re craving a healthy snack or topping for your morning yoghurt bowl.

They taste amazing, but that’s just part of the appeal. According to the kiwi experts at Zespri, they’re high in vitamin C, which helps to keep our immune systems functioning normally. Just one of these a day provides 100 percent of this vital nutrient.

They’re also high in fibre, especially the skin, which you can eat – and there’s a lot less chewing involved compared to normal green kiwis.

I really have to hold back from immediately eating the full pack of these when I return home, because £3 for four pieces of fruit is a lot and I want to make them last. But if you haven’t tried these M&S kiwis then I can’t recommend them enough – guaranteed you’ll never go back to regular kiwis again.
