Gardeners urged to plant one item now before ground freezes

Before the weather gets colder, there’s one item you’ll want to add to your garden so it’s in the best shape possible by spring.

While the months of March and April might seem like an age away right now, flowers will start to grow as leaves return to trees in no time.

Epic Gardening says you should plant spring bulbs before the ground freezes.

It says: “Planting spring bulbs is best done before the ground freezes but after the air temperatures have dropped a bit.

“In order for bulbs to bloom properly in the spring the bulb needs to remain dormant. This is why planting in the fall is so important.

“Daffodils, crocus, tulips, hyacinths and others are all very easy to plant.

“Depending on what type of bulb you have chosen to grow you will want to refer to the package instructions for bulb planting depth and spacing.”

You can help your garden be colourful and bright as the weather warms up at the start of spring if you put in the work now.

Simply Seed says you have a flexible planting window – but it adds that November is an ideal month for getting your bulbs into the ground.

Tulip bulbs can still be planted into December and even early January, especially in milder southern regions, provided the soil isn’t frozen solid.

With tulips in particular, they can be more forgiving so even if you aren’t able to plant before the first frost, you might still be okay.

In the UK, soil temperatures typically drop to around 5C to 10C by November which is the ideal temperature for planting new bulbs.

By completing this gardening job now, you can ensure your outdoor space will be thriving with colourful blooms by the time spring rolls around.
