Best pesto named in taste test — it beats the supermarkets

Pesto is an amazingly versatile ingredient. It goes beautifully in sandwiches, on pasta, dabbed on a cheese plate or dripped over salads.

The cheesy, herby, nutty punch of flavour elevates your meals and is a staple in many fridges across the UK. However, if you make your pesto at home, you know that store bought always lasts longer – and is likely cheaper to pick up. But with so many options available, how can you choose which is best for your fridge?

Consumer watchdog Which? Has found out once and for all which of the pesto brands is the best one. They organised a blind taste test of pestos from across the UK. Brands included Filippo Berio and Sacla to supermarket own-label pesto from Aldi, Asda, Morrisons, Tesco and more.

The taste test, undertaken by a panel of 71 people, ranked the flavour, aroma, appearance and texture of each pesto and said what they liked and disliked.

One specific brand came out on top.

The winner, the king of all pestos, has been found to be Filippo Berio.

Which? said: “This delicious pesto wowed our tasters. It had a lovely aroma, and three quarters found the basil flavour just right. Even more rated its consistency as spot on – neither too coarse nor too fine”.

The UK managing director of Filippo Berio, Water Zanre, said he was “immensely proud” to have been chosen as the best pesto.

“We didn’t know we were being tested so it has come as the most wonderful surprise to know we are best in class in this gold standard of awards. We know our customers love the authentic taste of our Pesto – now they know they are officially eating the very best!”
