British Gas issues ‘act now’ alert to all homeowners as temperatures plummet

British Gas has issued a stark warning to homeowners on how to safeguard their homes as the UK is gripped by freezing temperatures. The country has been hit by snow and icy conditions this week, with many regions under yellow or amber weather warnings.

Britons are grappling with plummeting temperatures that have dipped into the minuses. Overnight lows have reached a frosty -6.1°C in Cumbria, -5.8°C in Wales and -4.8°C in parts of Scotland. The sharp drop in outdoor temperatures can also wreak havoc indoors.

Severe winter conditions can pose a threat to pipes, which not only disrupts heating and hot water systems but can also lead to burst pipes, causing leaks and flooding.

The damage occurs when temperatures fall below zero, and inadequately insulated pipes freeze. As water freezes, it expands, exerting pressure on the pipe which can eventually cause it to buckle and split.

While insulating pipes is always advisable, British Gas reassures homeowners that there are other preventative measures they can take. However, they stress that timing is crucial, reports the Mirror.

They advise homeowners not to panic if they suspect a frozen pipe, but to be alert for warning signs. These include a gurgling noise from the central heating, the boiler failing to switch on, no water flowing from taps, a blocked sink, and a slow-flushing toilet.

The next step is to identify the frozen pipe. For modern condensing boilers, the most likely culprit is the condensate pipe.

This plastic pipe emerges from the boiler, making it straightforward to locate where it exits the property and check for frost damage. During harsh winters, external pipes face particular vulnerability, alongside those running through colder areas such as lofts, basements or cupboards.

After locating the frozen pipe, thawing becomes necessary. British Gas advises gradually applying hot water – crucially, never boiling – over the affected pipe to dissolve the ice.

Burst pipes present different challenges and can prove surprisingly difficult to identify. Warning signs include reduced water pressure, water staining on walls, protruding walls or damp areas on floors.

Should you suspect a burst pipe, immediately shut off the water supply and keep it closed until professional repairs are completed. Open every tap throughout the property to drain remaining water from the system.

Additionally, switch off the electricity if there’s any possibility of water contact. Contact your home insurer and record all damage. You should also call a qualified plumber to undertake the necessary repairs.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings across 47 regions, including an uncommon amber alert for snow. The warning indicates that “frequent wintry showers” throughout Yorkshire and surrounding areas may trigger significant disruption and potentially isolate communities.

Residents in Redcar and Cleveland, East Riding of Yorkshire and North Yorkshire have been warned to brace for “gusty winds” and “lightning strikes” alongside the icy conditions.
