Diesel drivers hit with £78 charges at pumps in December

Diesel car owners might find themselves in shock as they go to fill up their cars. With the price of fuel fluctuating and news that it may increase as early as next year, it appears that drivers are no better off now.

Both the prices of petrol and diesel fell in October, following a rise in September. However, despite the fall, the cost of filling a 55-litre family car stands at around an eye-watering £78.

Latest figures from RAC show that a litre of diesel decreased by 0.81p, from 143.38p to 142.57p, between September and October, bringing the total cost to fill a 55-litre tank with diesel to £78.41.

Fortunately, RAC research also found that average fuel prices at four major supermarkets are currently 3p cheaper, meaning if you fill up your tank there, you’ll be paying £76.89 instead, which is £1.72 cheaper.

According to the car service company, Morrisons is offering some of the lowest-priced diesel.

Simon Williams, RAC head of policy, said: “Our analysis shows that while it’s cheaper on average to fill up at supermarkets, it’s also worth seeking out low-priced independent forecourts that can offer great value petrol and diesel.

“The best advice is to keep a close eye out for low prices on your normal routes, or better still, use the myRAC app to search for the best prices in your area.”

Fuel prices are also expected to rise next year as plans for the 5p fuel duty freeze will be gradually reversed. Fuel duty, which is included in the price you pay at the pump, is currently 52.95p per litre.

However, the freeze, which was introduced in 2022 as a response to high oil prices resulting from the Russia-Ukraine war, will be reversed in stages from September 2026.

By April 2027, fuel duty will increase annually in line with the rate of inflation.
