From hovering over a bubbling pan and doubting the timer, preparing eggs can prove rather nerve-wracking. However, according to Tom Ferris, egg specialist from Roostys, there’s an easier, faster method to achieve that “perfect jammy yolk every time”, and it requires neither water nor a saucepan.
The specialist explained: “Most people assume you need a saucepan and boiling water to make soft-boiled eggs. But the truth is, your air fryer can do the exact same job, and it’s must easier to control.” With over half of British households now possessing an air fryer, this ingenious technique could become the preferred method for families preparing eggs at breakfast.
The specialist maintains the key is precision and temperature regulation, areas where air fryers particularly shine.
He continued: “You’re essentially recreating the same environment as boiling water, but without the mess or waiting around. It’s faster, more efficient, and you don’t even need to fill the sink with washing up afterwards.”
Begin by preheating the device to 140°C, then position your eggs directly in the basket without foil or a tray. Cook them for approximately eight minutes. Whilst they’re cooking, prepare a bowl containing cold water and ice.
Tom advised: “As soon as the timer’s done, move the eggs straight into that bowl, as it stops them cooking further and gives you that perfect soft centre.
“Once the eggs have sat in the ice bath for two minutes, they’re ready to peel and serve. The shell should come off cleanly and easily. You’ll be left with firm whites and beautifully runny yolks, exactly what you’d expect from a traditional soft boil.”
Nevertheless, each air fryer varies slightly, with certain models operating at higher temperatures than others, meaning some trial and error may be required to nail the perfect outcome.
Tom continued: “Air fryers are far more efficient than stovetops. You’re using less energy, less water and saving time, so it’s a win all round.
“If you prefer hard-boiled eggs, add a couple more minutes. For an even runnier yolk, take one minute off. It’s that easy.”
