“With proper garden preparation, you’re not only protecting and maintaining it, but improving it.”
One job that “must be” on your to-do list this week is to protect and cover garden plants if you haven’t already.
The expert said: “Plants need winter layers too, such as horticultural fleece. While investing in horticultural fleece is totally optional, it’s a great way to protect your beloved plants from frost. They wrap around your plants to protect them from the harsh weather.”
However, if you don’t want to invest in any, you can wrap plants using breathable bedding such as an old cotton sheet.
The expert said this will prevent the “harsh frosty bite” from ruining your plants.
James added: “A lightweight fabric is all they need to insulate them from the cold and protect their vulnerable roots.
“If you’d like to add an extra layer of protection, mulching with a thick layer of bark, soil or compost is an effective way to protect your plants.”
Mulch is generally used to suppress weeds, conserve water, and improve the soil around garden plants.
In winter, it can help protect the roots of plants, further shielding them from harsh elements. It can be made at home or bought from garden centres.
