Garlic and onions are always handy to have in your kitchen, as they go into all sorts of meals, whether you are making a simple pasta sauce or a huge roast dinner. However, there is nothing worse than finding a mouldy bulb at the bottom of your fridge, and they often spoil quickly, as most people do not know how to store them properly. Many people keep onions and garlic in the fridge, but the cold and humid environment is exactly what makes them spoil faster.
What is the best way to store garlic and onions?
It is not complicated to make garlic and onions last longer, as the most effective way to store them is to keep them inside a paper bag.
Onions and garlic are composed of a significant amount of water, and when exposed to additional moisture, they will spoil.
Fridges are often too humid, and other vegetables, such as potatoes, mushrooms, or leafy salad greens, also release a small amount of water while being stored.
Paper is a very breathable material and allows lots of air to circulate, which prevents spoilage as it helps any moisture evaporate quickly.
It simply prevents onions and garlic from absorbing any moisture they might leak, and keeping them dry will help them stay fresh.
How to store onions and garlic properly
All you need is a paper bag. I bought mine at a craft store for £1.20, but you can also save the paper bags you get from the supermarket for this storage method.
Then, prepare the bag by cutting a few small holes at the bottom, as this will allow more air to circulate. I used a paper puncher, but you could also carefully do this with scissors.
Place your onions and garlic in a bag, then store them in a dark area of your kitchen.
Onions and garlic are also sensitive to sunlight, as it triggers the same reaction as planting them in soil, and it can cause them to begin sprouting and taste bitter.
I just placed the onions and garlic in my kitchen cupboard, and it has now been over three weeks, and they are still fresh.
