Peace lilies and orchids are among the most favoured houseplants due to their low-maintenance nature, but they still require fertilisation for optimal blooming. Jilana Thomas, a specialist from Feel Grounded, stated: “Maintaining the soil’s nutrients will also help plants grow stronger and healthier, building their resistance to stress and disease.”

Jilana explained: “[Rice water is] great for adding nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in addition to healthy bacteria and sugars. Different rice types have varying nutrient values, but any type would be beneficial for your plants! Mix it up with whatever you have on hand.”

Rice water also helps stimulate root growth and improve soil health. It provides a gentler way to deliver necessary nutrients to houseplants without resorting to chemical or synthetic fertilisers.

To make a houseplant fertiliser for peace lilies and orchids, start by preserving the water remaining after cooking rice. Ensure that it’s free from salt or any seasonings.

Allow the water to cool before transferring it into a jar with a lid. It can be kept at room temperature for up to five days.

It’s crucial to dilute the rice water due to its high nutrient content. If given to plants in its concentrated form, the nutrients could be overly strong and potentially harm the roots.

Treat your orchids or peace lilies with this rice water mixture once every four weeks during spring and summer to provide them with a boost.

With this straightforward fertiliser supplement, your plants are likely to grow more robustly, healthier, and yield more blossoms.
