Getting white socks clean can be a big struggle for many people. Even if doing the laundry isn’t your favourite task, at least it’s fairly straightforward. Take dirty clothing, put it in the washing machine, hang it up to dry, and you’ve got clean washing. However, not white socks, as these laundry items can seem impossible to get white again once stained.
If you are wondering whether you should bin your filthy white socks and buy replacements, there’s no need. Sock retailer Hip Swan has shared their guide to whitening socks. They claimed that there are “several effective DIY whitening solutions to brighten socks”, but only one of them is “game-changing”. The experts said: “Soda crystals are a game-changing natural solution.”
They said: “For those looking for a natural yet powerful way to whiten socks, soda crystals are highly recommended.
“Soaking your socks in soda crystals for half an hour before washing can help shift stubborn stains and restore whiteness.
“Although not a bleaching agent, soda crystals are excellent at lifting dirt and grime, making them a staple for keeping your socks looking their best.”
Cleaning fans on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page are also fans of this hack. After one user failed to whiten their socks with bleach, many comments recommended using soda crystals.
One response was: “Soak in soda crystals for half an hour before popping on a hot white wash. Miracle worker!”
Another said, “Leave to soak in soda crystals. Then add them to a white wash and add a big scoop of soda crystals. All natural and work wonders.”
A third wrote: “Soak with soda crystals for 30 minutes, then put in the washing machine. They’ll come out dazzling.”
One other group member recommended using a pan, saying, “Soda crystals in a saucepan is game-changing. Just boil it on the cooker as they used to years ago. It works.”
