Is there a surer sign that the big day is rapidly approaching than festive meal deal sandwiches on the chilled shelves? They seem to come out earlier every year, and every now and again I succumb to one. As I browsed Canary Wharf’s Tesco at lunch time, my eye was caught by a main option at the bottom of the fridge – an item from their finest range, no less – the Chicken, Bacon and Trimmings Yorkshire Pudding.
Starving, the idea of a sort of roast dinner, albeit in a very compact form appealed to me at that moment. I had had a warm version of a Yorkshire pudding wrap a few years ago, and greatly enjoyed it. So I was feeling cautiously optimistic about my selection. Sitting back at my desk, I somewhat tentatively took my first bite of the £4.75 “premium” lunch, or was it two? There was rather a lot pudding to get through before you got to the filling.
It was akin to a badly one of the badly proportioned chicken wraps I occassionally make at home for lunch.
When I got to the filling – which included vegetables and “gravy mayonnaise”, whatever that is – I found the taste to be alright.
My main problem was the slightly dry pudding and the fact that the whole thing was cold.
It didn’t have the same charm as cold turkey sandwiches on Boxing Day, and resembled something you’ve left in the fridge overnight after a night out and relutantly eat for breakfast the next morning lest it go to waste.
I ate it very slowly whilst typing away during the second half of my shift, with colleagues intermitedly observing that some of the wrap still remained.
All of this is without even factoring in the consideration as to whether Yorkshire puddings should be making an appearance in a Christmas dinner anyway.
Aside from anything else, Tesco is quite brave to base an entire meal deal item on the presumption that they do, it could be argued.
I’d recommend trying a warm version of the Yorkshire pudding wrap if you wanted to try one.
