Christmas is looming, and so is the joy of sharing gifts with loved ones. There is not much better than the feeling of buying someone the perfect gift and knowing it will be well received by your friends and family.
We all like to add to the surprise by wrapping our gifts in seasonal paper, tissue or bags. However, some gifts prove hard to wrap and turn out not how we expected. I particularly struggle with wrapping round items such as candles.
So, when a viral video appeared on my social media, I knew I wanted to give it a try for my own Christmas wrapping. The TikTok clip from byrubbia has over 43 million views, with many trying out the hack themselves.
It seemed simple and the result was so much better than I was coming up with myself. I got all my supplies ready to wrap up a candle, just like in the clip.
The first step is to cut out a rectangular sheet of wrapping paper, so it is already off the roll. Ensure there is sufficient space at the top and bottom of the candle.
Then, fold the sides in and tape them together. I would have usually started wrapping the top and bottom, but this hack requires you to remove your gift.
Simply slide the candle out of the bottom of the tube you have created. Line up the gift next to the tube of wrapping paper, about 3/4 down.
You will have more paper at the top of the gift than at the bottom. Fold up 1/4 of the paper from the bottom of the tube. Then, fold down the top of the tube until it is level with the gift.
Make cuts along the bottom fold to create a fringe, snipping up to the fold line every 2cm or so. Turn your paper around so you now have the top fold in front of you.
Snip off the corners to create a diamond shape. Open out the paper until you see the diamond shape and line them up with each other.
Fold along the same top line, and you will see two more corners; snip these off as well. You are ready to put the gift back into the sleeve.
I simply slid the candle in from the bottom of my tube. You will see the fringe cuts line up with the bottom of your candle. Fold these in and tape the middle together.
Grab a ribbon or string and stand your candle up. Simply tie your ribbon around the middle of your diamond cuts and pull together. Tie a bow, and you’re done!
I was impressed with my own creation, but I did find that you needed a bit of patience. With more attempts, I expect this will get easier, and I would recommend using slightly thicker wrapping paper than I did.
I think this would give it more shape when creating the folds and make it less fiddly. But all in all, my gift is a lot more presentable, and my presents will certainly stand out this year.
