Terry’s Chocolate Orange is beloved by countless sweet-toothed fans worldwide. The irresistible marriage of chocolate and orange essence – coupled with the sheer joy of giving it a hefty whack to break apart the segments – proves tempting whenever shoppers spot it in stores.
Yet one inventive TikToker has revealed a method to recreate this iconic treat at home – incorporating real fruit. The footage comes courtesy of paigebakedthat, who frequently shares tutorials for crafting tasty homemade goodies. Boasting a substantial 47,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, Paige describes herself as “indecisive, a bit random, and never sticking to just one thing, but always found in the kitchen.”
Her video caption reads: “I’m not sure we all wished a Terry’s Chocolate Orange bar was made of real orange, but I did and I made one.” Speaking in the clip, she explains: “When I saw the Terry’s bar I immediately thought, what if a Terry’s Chocolate Orange bar was made with real orange, and what if I used the chocolate to cover the segments?”
Displaying a Terry’s bar next to two rows of fresh citrus segments, she adds: “When I saw the orange bar and the orange segments all lined up I knew this had to be done with a real orange.” She outlines her technique: “I started by peeling the orange and removing the white, and I drew around the bar and used it as a template. I counted each segment as I wanted to use the same amount.”
Next, she carefully removed the front segment from the two rows on the shop-bought bar, the only sections featuring the Terry’s logo, and trimmed away the surplus chocolate, reports the Mirror. “I kept the Terry’s piece to stick on the front,” she explained.
“Next, I melted the orange chocolate and loosened with a bit of oil. I dipped each segment individually and removed as much excess chocolate as I could and then carefully placed each piece into place, slowly forming the shape of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange bar.
“This had to be my favourite part, it was so fiddly but well worth it. Once the pieces were all in place I place the Terry’s Chocolate Orange pieces at the front.
“I finished with a little extra chocolate through the middle just to ensure it’s all secured together. I left it in the fridge to set for a few hours and there we have a Terry’s chocolate orange bar made with real oranges and Terry’s Chocolate orange chocolate.”
The clip sparked fierce discussion in the comments section, with viewers debating whether the citrus fruit Paige had used was genuinely an orange, or a smaller variety of fruit. One remarked: “That’s NOT an orange. That’s a tangerine, mandarin, clementine, however you want to call it, but that is not an orange.”
Paige replied to this observation with an orange emoji, prompting the commenter to elaborate: “They are types of citruses babes, not types of oranges. Some might say it that way and it might be correct too, but an orange and tangerine are two different fruits.”
According to healthline, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, and similar fruits are not technically varieties of orange, although they all belong to the same citrus family. When asked by another commenter about the taste, Paige responded: “I really like it… personally.”
Terry’s Chocolate Orange was first produced by the company at its York factory in 1932. In 2005, production was relocated to various facilities across Europe, before being centralised at a single factory in Strasbourg, France, in 2018.
Prior to launching the iconic chocolate orange, the company had previously marketed a chocolate apple. Additionally, in 1979, it introduced a chocolate lemon, but this was discontinued after just three years.
