There’s nothing more appealing than crisp white bedding, but one drawback is that it tends to stain quite readily. White pillows will frequently develop yellow marks over time, typically caused by perspiration seeping through the pillowcase whilst sleeping, or from retiring to bed with damp and greasy hair.
Whilst regular washing helps prevent stains from becoming established and more challenging to eliminate, there are some additional tricks that will maintain them even whiter and more brilliant. On a Facebook cleaning tips page, one member sought advice on tackling the yellow marks that bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar had failed to remove.
Amongst the more than 300 comments, the most recommended solution was to use a dishwasher tablet in the washing machine. According to many cleaning enthusiasts, it delivers impressive results with minimal effort.
Cat Christine said: “Use a dishwasher tablet in your washing machine. It’s a no-effort hack to get all the stains off in just one wash cycle.”
Sandra Moore commented: “I always use a dishwasher tablet to wash my pillows and any white laundry. My whites and pillows have never looked so white.”
Mandy Williams-Moss wrote: “Add a dishwasher tablet to your washing machine when cleaning your pillow with nothing else, and it’ll come out gleaming.”
Steven Reader replied: “Nothing has given me better results when washing my pillow than a dishwasher tablet has.”
Dishwasher tablets are also remarkably affordable. A pack of 30 can be purchased for approximately £1.34, which equates to roughly 4p per tablet.
They are readily available from most major supermarkets. Other Mrs Hinch enthusiasts recommended using soda crystals as an alternative. These also help brighten whites and are renowned for maintaining the cleanliness of washing machines.
Rachel Allen said: “I add a cup of soda crystals to my washing machine when cleaning my pillows. It works wonders.”
Lyn Keith observed: “I’ve never seen better results than what soda crystals offer.”
Sylvia Smith recommended: “Use soda crystals. Not only will it remove pillow stains, but it also helps to keep the washing machine clean.”
Sharon Bardin noted: “Don’t use white vinegar in your washing machine, it damages it. Use soda crystals instead.”
Dishwasher tablets not only deliver outstanding cleaning performance but also represent an incredibly economical kitchen essential, with a pack of thirty frequently costing little more than a pound.
