Tuna filling is a much-loved lunch for many, from adding it to sandwiches to salads. However, sometimes you can be greeted with a very greasy and oily taste. Mayonnaise is commonly added to tuna to give it a creamier flavour, yet this comes with extra fat in the filling.
It can end up being heavy and sometimes slimy. The texture is enough to put someone off their lunch, but thankfully, a cook has a very simple swap, which can improve the taste. Lisa Goldfinger, cook and founder of Panning the Globe, has a simple way to get a creamy tuna filling without any mayonnaise. She shared: “If you love creamy tuna salad but you’re reluctant to add loads of mayo, I’m with you.
“Most tuna salad recipes suggest one to four tablespoons of mayo per serving. That’s between 180 and 360 calories of fat per serving, just from the mayo alone.
“Delicious for sure, but not the healthiest and also not necessary, because plain low-fat yoghurt is a great substitute for mayonnaise.”
Yoghurt is actually a super simple ingredient that can improve lots of sandwich and salad recipes. It can give a much fresher taste than mayonnaise.
Since yoghurt is already thick and creamy, it can enhance fillings to give it the same texture. Plus you won’t be adding in the fats and additives that processed mayonnaise comes with.
Mayonnaise can cause tuna filling to spoil within just two hours in hot weather. This is because of the extra fat, which can ruin food taken to a barbecue or picnic.
Meanwhile, yoghurt is light and can add a slightly tangy taste to tuna. The flavour pairs well with lemon juice or radishes.
Make tuna filling even tastier
Ingredients
One can of tuna (140g)120ml of plain low-fat yoghurt Three tablespoons of chopped radishes Three tablespoons of chopped red onionTwo tablespoons of capers (one whole, one chopped up)Two teaspoons of Dijon mustardOne lemon (one half to juice, one half for wedges) Salt (to taste)
Method
Open the can of tuna and drain any liquid. Place the tuna in a bowl and mash with a fork until smooth.
Then, add in the yoghurt, radishes, onions, capers, mustard and a little salt. Juice a lemon and add one teaspoon of lemon juice. For an even creamier filling, add more yoghurt. You can also add more lemon juice or salt to adjust to your own taste.
Mix everything together and your tuna filling is ready to mix into a salad or spread on a sandwich.
